Tie Dye Techniques

Let us teach you the easiest and best tie dye techniques. This will enable you to have the best finished product. Tie dying is a great way to jazz up a t-shirt, a tote bag or clothing article of your choice.

Tie Dye Fabric

Cotton, Rayon, hemp and flaxdo fabrics work the best for tie dying. These fabrics grab a hold of the dye and give you a nice design.

Tie Dye Supplies

Fabric dye
Rubber bands or wax string
A shirt or item to dye
Rubber gloves
A bucket or bowl
A couple of squeeze bottles
Plastic wrap or a gallon sized zip lock bag
Newspapers to cover your work area

Tie Dye Techniques

I am going to show you how to tie dye a t shirt. You can use this same technique to tie dye any clothing item that you want.

Soak your t shirt in water and soda ash for about 10 minutes. Soda ash will make your dyes brighter, more vibrant and set your dyes. Wring it out and lay it on a flat surface (if you don't soak your t shirt in a soda ash and water mixture then spritz you t shirt with water) and smooth out the wrinkles. Fold you shirt into the pattern that your want.

Use rubber bands or wax string to bind up your shirt. Put on your rubber gloves and use your squeeze bottles of dye to squirt the dye onto your t shirt. You can use any kind of fabric dye. Just follow the directions on how to mix up the dye that is on the brand you decide to use. After your t shirt has all the dye that you want on it, wrap it up in plastic wrap or put it in a gallon zip lock bag.

Keep the t shirt wrapped in plastic (or in a gallon zip lock bag) for about 10 hours or overnight. This will allow the dye to absorb into the fibers of your t shirt.

Take the t shirt out and remove the rubber bands or wax string. Rinse your t shirt under cold water. Rinse it until the water runs clear. The last step is to wash the t shirt in hot water. Wash it alone so that dye doesn't bleed into other clothes. This wil set the colors so that the dye doesn't bleed into anything else when washed.
