How To Make A Collage

If your are wondering how to make a collage, you have come to the right place! Once you learn the basics, you can use different mediums and make collages of different sizes. Keep a finished collage for yourself, give it as a gift or auction it off.

We made a collage with our second grade class. The collage was then auctioned off and went for a large sum of money! Below we describe how to make a collage and how ours came together.

Supplies Needed

One 18" X 22" Shadow Box
One Piece of 18" X 22" Of Foam Board
Two Pieces of 18" X 22" Of Cardboard
Craft Glue

Making A Collage

We took one of our 18" X 22" cardboard's cut it into 20 squares. Each square was four inches wide and four inches tall. We went to our second grade class and gave each of our 18 students a 4" X 4" square. Each child was asked to go home and make a 3D flower on their square. They were allowed to use any type of material that they wanted. Each child was asked to sign their name on the front of their 4" X 4" card.

When the cards came back, we assembled the flowers on our remaining 18" X 22" cardboard. We cut 3 inch squares of foam board and glued them to the back of every other flower. This allows every other card to stick out farther than a card on either side of it. It added more dimension to our finished collage.

After all of the flowers were glued onto our cardboard, we put the collage into our shadow box. We had 18 students and 20 spaces of squares to fill. So we got on the computer and typed in a cute saying for the remaining two spaces.

The kids used a variety of things to make their flowers. Our finished 4" X 4" cards came back with great things on them! The material that our kids used to make their flowers were: tissue paper, glitter, marbles, wire, beans, buttons, jewels, pom-poms, string, sea shells, macaroni, paper clips, wrapping paper, comics, beads, silk flowers, popsicle sticks, dried flower, ribbons, bottle caps, foam shapes and pipe cleaners.

Make sure that your shadow box is deep enough for your finished collage not to touch the inside glass. Our shadow box was 4 inches deep.

As you can see the finished project is stunning! Our collage was sold at a school auction to raise money for the school. This idea could be used as a gift to a teacher from her class or co-workers could make one for someone retiring. It would be a great gift for a favorite coach or things you collect from a favorite vacation.

This is an easy project for kids, adults and groups. It makes a wonderful keepsake for yourself or someone special. Pick a theme because now you know how to make a collage!
