Homemade Christmas Crafts!

Learn to make homemade Christmas crafts! Below is a pattern for these beautiful ornaments. They can be used as a gift or to decorate in your home or on your tree. This will be a heirloom in your family for many generations to come.

Victorian Ball Christmas Craft

What You Will Need

Styrofoam balls, 4 inch
Assorted ribbons, lace, and braids, 3/4 inch and 1/8 inch wide
Craft pins, long and short
A dry sponge
Sequins
Beads...round shaped, pear shape and/or flower shapes
Pearls with a hole through the middle of them
Tacky white craft glue
Scissors

Divide the ball into 6 equal sections by pinning three seperate lengths of the ribbon around the ball. Pull the ribbon tightly around the ball and secure it by pushing a small pin through the ribbon into the styrofoam ball. (Push the pin through the ribbon, then dip the end of the small craft pin in your tacky craft glue and then into your styrofoam ball.)

Next, use three different strips of ribbon (or lace) to cover the six open areas between the first set of ribbons. Secure the ribbon or lace (make sure it is pulled tightly around the ball) with push pins. Your styrofoam ball should now be completely covered with no white areas showing.

***As a variation to this, you can cover the styrofoam ball with material. Your homemade Christmas craft doesn't have to be covered with just ribbon. Also, once you make one of these, you will have the hang of it. You can use any size or shape of styrofoam ball.

Next, make a ribbon hanger by taking six inches of ribbon or lace. Fold it over 1 1/2 inches at each end to form a large bow. Pin the bow to the top of the ball, in the center. Use small straight pins dipped in glue.

Then take eleven inches of ribbon and fold 3/4 inches of each end under and pin it on top of the large bow to form a small bow. Use small straight pins dipped in glue to secure the looped ribbon to the styrofoam ball. You now will have a hanging loop.

Next, lay in front of you your dry sponge, large hat pins, beads and sequins. Make a pattern of beads and sequins on your large hat pin and store the finished pins in your sponge. Make up about 85 finished hat pins. They can all be alike or make up 1-3 different patterns (no more than 3 different patterns for each victorian ball Christmas craft.)

The Pattern that we used on our large hat pins is this:

1 small sequin...cup side up
1 big pear shaped bead
1 big green sequin...cup side up
1 big pearl
1 big green sequin...cup side up
1 flower bead

Next, pour a small amount of your tacky white craft glue in a small container. Take your finished decorated hat pins and dip the tip of the pin in the glue. Now push the pins into your styrofoam ball. The glue will help the pins to stay in the ball.

You can push the pins into the ball to create whatever kind of pattern that you like.

Use four long hat pins that are decorated with beads and sequins to create a stand for your large decorated homemade Christmas craft. (smaller ornaments will only need three decorated hat pins to create a stand.)

You can even secure a tassle to the bottom of your ball Christmas ornament with a small straight pen. Dip the end of that pin in your glue so that it will stay for years to come!

Make Chrismas Ornaments

Older children can help you with this craft. They are very good at making up the large hat pins with beads, pearls and sequins and putting them in the sponge.

These ornaments make wonderful gifts that people will cherish for years to come. They are made well and therefore store well.

Since they have a victorian theme, they can even be kept out year around. If you are looking for a boutique crafts...this is a good one. These sell very well for about $20 each. If you use scraps of lace, ribbon and material to make these then they really become money making crafts.

They can be displayed on an orament stand, hung on a peg, hung on your Christmas tree or stand on their own.

Homemade Christmas crafts are fun to do, just don't rush the project. Create a memory and a keepsake! Enjoy this project and we'll bring you some more homemade Christmas crafts!
