A Free Scrapbooking Idea...Or Two!

Here is a free scrapbooking idea...or two. Understand how to silhouette a picture, why its important to journal, how to use stencils and so much more. These tips are really useful for those who are beginner scrapbooking. Almost every scrapbook will contain a combination of text and photos.

After all, the whole purpose of a scrapbook is to capture your experiences and memories for all time. One of the most common ways we do that is to record words and images. There is an infinite number of ways to do that to express your unique creativity.

Journaling

When you are putting a photo album together it is great to journal on your pages. You can write descriptions of the event under the photos. Be sure to write the date and location of what is happening. The idea is that if you are not sitting next to the person looking through your album, they will know what happened by reading what you have written. Write with your best handwriting and make sure your writing is readable. Do not compare your handwriting to others. It is not about who has the best handwriting.

Get Creative

Pictures have a way of bringing to mind more than just what's shown in the photograph. They bring all sorts of associations with them. Try to convey these emotions by what you write, the use of an appropriate sticker or colors of paper.

Use word phrases to help tell the story of your pictures. Turn a simple phrase into a work of art by enlarging it, splitting the sentence in half, turning it upside down, coloring it, moving some words above or below the others, separating them off.... The possibilities are endless. But be clever and do more than just alter them at random. Let the associations those images bring to mind guide you.

A photo of a snow-capped mountain from a winter vacation may bring to mind two levels, separated by the snow line. Shape your sentence into a triangle and color the words on top in white, while those below are soft greens and browns. An image of a delightful deer bouncing through a forest suggests movement. Let your words dance by running them up, down, up, down on top of the picture.

Simple phrases can be placed above or below the photos, just as you would on a scrapbook page. There's only one limit to the way you can creatively combine photos and text in your scrapbook: your imagination. Before you know it, you will be giving out a free scrapbooking idea..or two...of your own! Fellow scrapbookers will love to see what you have done.

Crop Or Silhouette A Photograph

Do not be afraid to cut your pictures. The first picture is the hardest to cut! Once you realize it is ok to cut your pictures...you will be addicted to scrapbooking! Cutting pictures allows you to get so many more pictures on a page.

Cutting pictures is how the phrase "cropping pictures" came about. This is how this whole craze started! My best free scrapbooking idea to you is do not be afraid to cut your pictures!

So what do you cut when you cut a picture? Silhouetting is the term used for cutting around something. Like a person or a flower.

Let's say your in the mountains and you have several pictures that look alike. The only difference is the different people in the pictures. Start cropping those pictures! A page is much more interesting when every picture is not the same.

There is no need to show the same background again and again. Another example is a trip to the beach. Lets say you have 25 pictures of your kids playing on the beach. Keep two or three of the best pictures. The rest, grab your scissors and start cutting around their bodies, the sandcastles, the beach towel and so on.

Use A Stencil

Another great way is to get yourself some stencils of the alphabet. Take five similar pictures. Use the stencil to trace (use a pencil or pen) the letter over the picture. Cut the letter out. Spell the word BEACH. Now you have five beach pictures that spell out the word BEACH. This is a great way to start your scrapbooking page.

Layout Your Page First

Last but not least, a free scrapbooking idea is to lay your page out first before you use an adhesive to finish your page. Lay the paper out. Arrange your pictures and stickers. If you like the look, then go ahead and use an adhesive to attach everything to the page. Do your journaling after you are happy with how the page looks.
