Card Making Ideas For A Pop Up Card

Here are some GREAT card making ideas! Make a beautiful card, from scratch in a short amount of time. Easy for all ages. Once you learn some basic techniques you can make a card for any occasion. Free card making will save you money.

Handmade Card Making

If you make a card, most people will keep them for years if not forever. They become treasured keepsakes for most people. Card making ideas are endless since you can change out the paper, shapes and embellishments!

What You Will Need

Two sheets of cardstock paper that complement each other
Double stick tape or a craft adhesive
Regular scissors
A cookie cutter
Embellishments of your choice

Start with two sheets of 8 1/2" X 11" cardstock. Take one piece and fold it in half. Score the card (use a popsicle stick, edge of a pencil or your finger) by pressing along the creased line. Turn the card over and score along the creased line. This will give the fold a professional look.

On the complementing cardstock, we want to use it to make a pop out card. We will use this second sheet of cardstock to make a four fold accordion.

To make a four fold accordion fold, fold the cardstock in half. Score the edges. Open the cardstock up. Bring each of the ends into the middle. (This is called a gatefold since your card now looks like a gate!) Press the sides down and score the two sides.

Now open the cardstock and return it to being folded in half. Take a cookie cutter (we are using a star shaped cookie cutter), and place it on your cardstock. Use the folded edge of your cardstock an trace half of the cookie cutter on your cardstock.

Use your straight scissors to cutout the star. When you open your cardstock you will see your shape cut out of the middle of your cardstock.

Some cardstock has design or color on both sides. Sometimes, the design or color will only be on one side. In our card, one side of the cardstock had a design and the other side was white. The cutout would show white and we did not want that. So we took scrap paper and taped it in the middle of the white side. By doing this, when you look through the cutout, you would see color.

Take your first piece of cardstock (that you folded in half) and put double stick tape (glue or some kind of a craft adhesive) on the left and right sides. Now take your four folded cardstock that has the shape cut out of the middle and line the edges up with your first piece of cardstock. Press the edges together.

You now can jazz your card up with stickers, ribbons, stamps, rub ons, glitter or anything else that you have.

More Card Making Ideas

You can make larger pop up cards by using 12" X 12" paper.
If you don't want to use a cookie cutter, you can always draw your own shape that is to be cutout.
Make sure that your cookie cutter does not go pass the gatefold on your cardstock for best results.
